How do we stem the tide of gentrification and displacement in California?
In cities throughout California, housing prices and rents are rising rapidly, and many low-income communities and communities of color are experiencing rapid gentrification and displacement. Low- and middle-income residents are being driven out of their communities to places that are often far from jobs and other opportunities, and some are even being driven out of the state. This displacement is imposing great financial, social, and health costs on the very families and business owners who are least able to afford them.
Throughout the state, this crisis has galvanized tenants’ rights organizations, community organizations, nonprofits and others to organize in their communities and to collaborate at regional and state levels to promote more equitable development and to prevent displacement.
In this webinar, you will hear from statewide leaders and local advocates from the Investment Without Displacement Network as they discuss promising strategies for addressing these issues. The speakers will discuss:
- The importance of regional and local organizing efforts;
- The work of the Investment Without Displacement (IWD) network;
- State level policies that can help reduce displacement;
- The interconnection between local organizing and state policy advocacy for driving system change in California; and
- How funders can make a difference on this important issue.
