Feb. 19, 2025 | 10-11 a.m. PT | Virtual
Whether it’s community land trusts in an urban neighborhood or regenerative farming projects in rural hamlets, funders are increasingly focused on equitable access to land as a form of economic and political power building. Controlling land – and what happens on that land – is key to self-determination.
Join us for a conversation on Feb. 19th, from 10 – 11 am PT about different strategies for community-controlled land.
We’ll hear from the Center for Community Investment about national trends and best practices in community land ownership. They’ll share which community ownership models have been deployed to support different goals, whether wealth-building, affordable housing, or piloting sustainable ways to farm.
The McKnight Foundation will dive into its support of community land trusts in the Twin Cities, including work to help rebuild Rondo, a historic African American community torn apart by highway construction. Finally, we’ll learn about an emerging body of work at the 11th Hour Project to empower residents of small, environmentally challenged places in the San Joaquin Valley to reclaim and revitalize the land they work.
Speakers:
Janaki Anagha – Program Manager, Food and Agriculture, 11th Hour Project
Gretchen Beesing – Senior Fellow at the Center for Community Investment
Chad Schwitters, Senior Program Officer, Vibrant & Equitable Communities, McKnight Foundation
Omar Carrillo Tinajero – Executive Director at the Center for Community Investment.
