Across the country, funders are supporting exciting new approaches to urban climate mitigation that prioritize equity and community leadership. In our current moment, with COVID-19 and institutional racism exacerbating inequities and harming the health and safety of our communities, people-driven approaches are more critical than ever. The session will look at several ways that people are leading this work in their communities: in direct partnership with local government; in networks with other community leaders; and in partnerships focused on developing or implementing climate mitigation and adaptation policies. We’ll learn about tools and resources that can help advance the work of an equity-first approach to climate planning and policy — including the Greenlining Institute’s Equitable Electrification Framework and the Partners for Places matching grant program, an initiative of the Funders Network and the Urban Sustainability Directors Network. We’ll also dig into early successes and work underway in Providence, R. I. and Los Angeles, Calif., and opportunities in front of us to implement climate strategies that center racial and economic equality.
