There are several statewide voter initiatives on the November 2018 ballot that could have a huge impact on California’s communities. Here is a quick briefing on these key ballot initiatives.

Proposition 6: The SB 1 Repeal

SB 1, passed in 2017, provides significant funds in California’s transportation infrastructure through increased gas taxes and vehicle fees.

SB 1 raises a groundbreaking $8.5 billion for sustainable transportation. But an initiative to repeal SB 1 is on the ballot, despite strong support from cities and business leaders.

SB 2 and 3

SB 2 would create a permanent funding source for affordable housing through a new real estate transaction fee. SB 3 is a $4 billion bond measure for affordable housing programs, including a major investment in housing for families and veterans. This Mercury News article describes both measures.

The Water Supply and Water Quality Act of 2018

If approved, this bond would allocate $8.9 billion for water projects. This is in addition to water funds included in Proposition 68, which was passed by voters in June.

Proposition 10: Costa-Hawkins Repeal

The 1995 Costa Hawkins Rental Housing Act limits the kind of rent control policies cities are able to impose. A repeal would allow for an expansion of rent control across California.
