Smart Growth California was founded out of the recognition that by working together, funders can have a far greater collective impact.
Our 2017 Funder Summit in February was a chance to build the powerful connections between grantmakers who are working in many issue areas to build great communities in California, including: social justice; public health; affordable housing; transportation; water; parks and open space; climate; and jobs and economic opportunity.
The event was attended by over 80 people, almost 50 of whom were funders. Funders who attended the convening learned from an incredible group of community members, nonprofit leaders, elected officials, funders, and other experts on a wide range of topics. Funders enjoyed the networking sessions and breakout sessions where they discussed key opportunities, strategies, and ways to make a difference. Funders also learned about the practical and innovative ways that San Diego communities are addressing climate change, water, parks, affordable housing, transportation, and more.
But as always, it’s the connections – and the possibilities that come with these connections – that leave funders ready and able to do more.
Here is a glimpse at some of the magic that happened in San Diego. We look forward to seeing you at our next in-person event, and many thanks to our funder planning committee members: Kelvin Alfaro, Steve Eldred, Nicola Hedge, Reginald Jones, Ann Sewill, Mark Valentine, and Emily Young.
